Black and White photography seems to be celebrating a come-back nowadays. The recent launch of the Leica M9 monochrome camera indicates that there is a strong interest in monochrome photography. However, to many photographers the color image is shoot first and then converted to bw using the image editor.  There are also many plug-ins for monochrome conversion available in the market. I tested several of them and found the Topaz B&W Effects very interesting. After installation the user is presented with a list of presets on the left side of the screen. For the following sample photos, I first selected one of the “Opalotype” presets and then fine tuned the resulting image with the settings on the right side of the screen. The settings can also be saved as a new preset.

Seeing a lot ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) shots in the net I got inspired to try it with the Skink Pinhole Pancake. To shoot ICM, you need is to slow down your camera to 1/10 seconds to 1 second. Then, while pressing the shutter, move your camera to produce an unsharp image intentionally. Depending on your skills and luck, you might get that painterly impressionist piece of fine art photograph. Using pinhole with ICM has the big advantage that you need not focus for image sharpness and you can easily work with slow exposure times by adjusting your ISO settings to a lower value. The following experimental pictures are just the beginning of more fun to come.

Der Skink Pinhole Pancake kann zur Verlängerung der Brennweite natürlich auch zusammen mit Zwischenringen eingesetzt werden. Dazu haben wir einfach den Ring Nr. 1 aus dem dreiteiligen Zwischenringkit zwischen Kamera und Lochblendenobjektiv geschraubt. Damit verlängert sich die 13mm Brennweite um 36mm auf 49mm. Passend dazu, haben wir eine Lochblende in der Größe 0.3mm in das Objektiv gelegt.

To extend the focal length of the The Skink Pinhole Pancake, surely it can also be used together with extension rings. Here we used ring no. 1 of the Extension Ring Kit and installed it between the camera and the pinhole pancake lens. By doing this, we extended the 13mm original focal length by 36mm to 49mm. Suiting this, we inserted the corresponding pinhole of size 0.3mm into the pancake lens.

Kein Zweifel, es macht Spaß, sich mit einer Holga Spielzeugkamera kreativ zu betätigen. Immerhin handelt es sich bei der Holga um eine echte Mittelformatkamera! Die Kamera hat eine kleine Meniskuslinse aus Acryl mit 60mm Brennweite und  Bildwinkel von 70° in 6×6 Format. Natürlich kann man über die Bildqualität streiten, aber das ist doch einer der Gründe, warum es soviel Spaß macht, mit der Holga zu fotografieren. Jedes Bild garantiert eine neue Überraschung.

Es gibt auch Spielzeugkameras mit einer eingebauten Lochblende, wobei auch hier letztendlich die Bildqualität von der Qualität der Blende abhängig ist. Lochblenden aus Plastik, Kupfer oder Aluminium sind zu dick um scharfe Bilder erzeugen zu können. Unsere Lochblenden sind aus einem ungewöhnlich dünnem (30µm) und zudem äußerst festem Stahlsubstrat hergestellt.  Falls Sie Lust haben, diese mit Ihrer Holga auszuprobieren – hier ein paar Tipps dazu. Die Acryllinse der Holga wird innerhalb des Objektivs durch einen kleinen schwarzen Ring festgehalten. Die folgenden Bilder illustrieren, wie Sie die Linse einfach durch eine Lochblende, Zonenplatte oder Photonensieb ersetzen. Unsere Blenden haben, passend zum Holgaobjektiv, einen Durchmesser von 20mm.

Magnificant pictures with Skink Pinhole in a Holga

No doubt, using a Holga toy camera to express your creativity is fun. After all, the Holga is a real medium format camera! The camera has a small meniscus lens made of plastic with 60mm focal length and a 70° angle of view on 6×6 format. Of course one can argue about the image quality, but this is one of the reasons, why people have fun playing with a Holga. With every picture you are in for a new surprise.

There are also some toy cameras with a build-in pinhole aperture, where the picture quality equally is determined by the quality of the aperture. Pinhole apertures made of plastic, copper or aluminium are too thick to render sharp images. Our pinhole apertures are made of very thin (30µm), yet extremely strong steel substrate with high tensile strength. If you are tempted to try one of those in your Holga camera, here are some ideas on how to do it.  The plastic lens of the Holga is held in place by a small black ring inside the lens-body. The following  pictures illustrate how you can replace this lens with a pinhole aperture, zone plate or zone sieve. Our apertures, compatible with the Holga lens chamber,  have a diameter of 20mm.

Was ist Panning, oder auch das “Mitziehen” in der Fotografie? Mit dieser Technik folgen Sie dem bewegten Objekt mit der Kamera und einer relativ langsamen Belichtungszeit. Ziel ist es, das Objekt vor einem verwischten Hintergrund scharf herauszustellen. Idealerweise wird dabei die Bewegung der Kamera der Geschwindigkeit und Bewegungsrichtung des Objekts angepasst. Das Fokussieren erfolgt dabei entweder über die Kameraautomatik oder durch manuelle, geschätzte Voreinstellung. Beim Fotografieren von sich fortbewegenden Menschen, erfolgt die Belichtung mit Zeiten zwischen 1/10 und 1/60 Sekunde. Bei der Lochkamerafotografie denkt man automatisch an lange Belichtungszeiten. Und diese in Kombination mit “Panning”? Ja, die aktuellen lichtstarken Digitalkameras mit erweitertem ISO Bereich und kurzer Brennweite machen dies möglich. Einfach den Skink Pinhole Pancake auf das Bajonett Ihrer Kamera montieren und die ISO Einstellung so justieren, daß die resultierende Belichtungszeit in den obengenannten Zeitrahmen passt. Dank der unbegrenzten Schärfentiefe des Lochkameraobjektivs entfällt hier das Fokussieren auf die Entfernung zum Objekt, Fokussieren Sie Ihre Aufmerksamkeit ganz auf das sich bewegende Motiv. Pinhole Panning with the Skink Pinhole Pancake

What is panning in photography? The idea is that you follow your moving subject with the camera using a relatively slow shutter speed. The aim is to render the subject sharp against a blurred background. Ideally the movement of the camera is matching the speed and direction of the subject. Focussing is done either by the auto focus tracking of your camera or by manual, estimated focus setting. When taking pictures of moving people, the typical exposure time ranges between 1/10 and 1/60 seconds. Pinhole photography is all about long exposure times. Now, how about pinhole panning? Yes, current light-sensitive digital camera models with a extended ISO range and a shorter focal length make it now possible. Just mount the Skink Pinhole Pancake on your camera and adjust the ISO value to allow exposure times in the above mentioned range. Thanks to the pancake’s unlimited depth of field, there is no need to focus the distance. You are free to focus your attention the the moving subject. Have fun!

With this pinhole lens we have considered your wishes and introduce in addition to the “classic” version a new model of the pinhole pancake. The Skink Pinhole Pancake “Retro” is made of high quality massive aluminium. It offers a precisely machined bayonet mount to fit your camera. Unlike so-called “Body Caps” there are no plastic parts. Thanks to its modular design, various pinhole apertures, zone plates or zone sieves can easily be swapped with each other. The standard filter thread allows the use of filters, lens cap or lens hood. In the same way as the “classic” version, this pinhole pancake is available in three different configurations, as “Starter Kit”, “Creative Kit” or “Pro Kit”. 1. Kamera auf das Stativ setzen und so positionieren, daß die Richtung ungefähr mit dem gedachten Bildausschnitt übereinstimmt. Bei Weitwinkelaufnahmen ist dies nicht so kritisch, weil die Kamera einen weiteren Blickwinkel hat als das menschliche Auge. Eine Wasserwaage ist hilfreich, wenn Sie auf einen waagerechten Horizont Wert legen.

2. Vor der eigentlichen Belichtung decken Sie die Lochblende mit einem Finger ab. Nun kann der Schieber im Filmmagazin herausgezogen werden. Warten Sie einen Moment bis die Kamera wieder ruhig steht. Jetzt nehmen Sie den Finger vom Objektiv und zählen: ein-und-zwanzig, zwei-und-zwanzig, drei-und-zwanzig  …. je nach gemessener oder gedachter Belichtungszeit. Nach erfolgter Belichtung, decken Sie das Objektiv wieder ab und schieben den Schieber zurück ins Magazin.

1. Position the camera on a tripod while making sure that the direction corresponds with the desired composition. When doing wide-angle photos this does not have to be very exact because the camera has a wider angle of view than the human eye. A water-level or bull-eye is helpful if you desire a level horizon.

2. Before the actual exposure, you just cover the pinhole with a finger. Now the slider or dark-slide can be removed from the film back. Wait a moment to ensure that the camera is not moving. Now you take your finger off the lens and count: twenty-one, twenty-two, twenty-three…. according to the measured or imagined exposure time. After the exposure you cover the pinhole again and push the dark-slide back into the film back.

Film is still widely available and professional photographers love the “gigapixel” resolution of this medium. Film can store far more detail than any digital camera sensor. Fine and coarse details are recorded naturally. Using a premium quality pinhole aperture on medium format film rewards the photographer with images which are truely special. A pinhole lens offers unlimited depth of field with equally sharp details throughout the picture, but due to longer exposure times, moving objects are recorded with more or less motion blur. Embracing motion blur as an element of time is a wonderful technique to expand ones creative horizon.  A shorter focal length and a resulting wider angle of view produce a light fall-off towards the edges of an image. This beautiful vignetting effect is typical for wide-angle pinhole photos.

Wir sind wieder in Tanjung Bidara, in einem freundlichen kleinen Fischerdorf an der Strasse von Malakka. Sicherlich waren kreative Urkräfte am Werk als einst eine “handvoll” runder Steinbrocken an diesem einst tektonisch aktivem Küstenabschnitt verteilt wurden. Die Riesenfelsen haben wir früher schon oft fotografiert und mithilfe von Graufiltern von dem Hintergrund der bewegten See herausgestellt. Heute haben wir die mysteriösen Felsen von Tanjung Bidara gleich mit dem Lochkameraobjektiv fotografiert. Je nach Tageslicht und gewünschtem Effekt können die zwischen einer Sekunde und einer Minute variierenden Belichtungszeiten kreativ genutzt werden um das Spiel der Meereswellen aufzuzeichnen oder auch ganz auszublenden. Leider ist die schönste Zeit, vor und nach dem Sonnenuntergang viel zu kurz um alle möglichen Perspektiven auszuprobieren – ein Grund mehr, wiederzukommen.

Boulders on the beach of Tanjung Bidara

Again we are visiting Tanjung Bidara, a small friendly fishing village on the Straits of Malacca. Certainly, there were some creative primal forces at work, when a “handful” of round boulders were placed on this once tectonically active stretch of the coast. We have taken photos of those huge boulders before and, with the help of ND filters, managed to isolate them from the background of the moving waters of the sea. Today we used a pinhole lens right away to photograph the mysterious rocks of Tanjung Bidara. Depending on the intensity of light and desired effect, the exposure times vary between one second and one minute, which can be explored creatively to record the flow of the waves or hide them altogether. Unfortunately the time of the golden light, when the sun is setting, is far too short to try all possible perspectives – another reason to return.

Schade, bei allen digitalen Spiegelreflexkameras verhindert der eingebaute Infrarot Sperrfilter, daß diese Kameras auch in der Infrarotfotografie eingesetzt werden können. Bei einer betagten Nikon D70s haben wir deshalb diese kleine grüne Sensorabdeckung aus Glas, den “Hot-Mirror”, einfach entfernt, ohne diesen durch Normalglas zu ersetzen. Die folgenden drei Pinholeaufnahmen wurden mit dem Skink Pinhole Pancake Versa mit Infrarotfilter (850nm) gemacht. Belichtungszeit 2-3 Sekunden bei Sonnenschein.

In order to enable the camera to take infrared photos, the hot-mirror filter which is located on top of the sensor, was removed without replacing it with normal glass. This time, an infrared filter (850nm) was used together with the Skink Pinhole Pancake Versa to take the following two infrared shots. The exposure time varied from 2 to 3 seconds.

Dabei werden die Segelregatten in der Kieler Förde von majestätischen Windjammern aus der ganzen Welt begleitet. Diesmal fotografieren wir zur Abwechslung mit dem Skink Pinhole Pancake und dem Photonensieb “medium glow”.  Es verleiht den langsam vorbeiziehenden weissen Segeln einen malerischen Halo-Effekt.

For a change, we used the Skink Pinhole Pancake with a photon lens, the zone sieve “medium glow”, which adds a dreamy glow to the sails of the windjammers which are slowly passing by.

Wir sind in Friedrichstadt. Das frühsommerliche Sonnenlicht ist stark und kontrastreich. Es lädt gerade dazu ein, Eindrücke von den Kanälen und Umgebung mit dem Photonensieb “medium glow”  festzuhalten.

Der Strandkorb hat seinen Ursprung in Warnemünde, so wurde das erste Exemplar um 1882 an der Ostsee gesichtet.

The beach chair originally comes from Warnemünde, Germany. The first of its kind was spottet in 1882 at beach of the Baltic Sea.

Only after its 125th anniversary, the beach chair gradually became popular on beaches and cafes outside Germany, some even made it to America and Asia.

The following images were taken at the North Sea with the Skink Pinhole Pancake using pinhole or photon lens “medium glow”.

From the pinhole camera´s perspective, beach chairs seem to have some surreal characteristics….

Pinholeaufnahmen zeichnen sich durch eine gleichmäße Tiefenschärfe aus. Gegenstände im Vordergrund werden ebenso scharf oder unscharf abgebildet wie der Hintergrund in weiter Ferne. Aus der Froschperspektive  gesehen, sieht die Welt manchmal ganz anders aus. Bei diesen Aufnahmen wurde die Kamera, leicht nach oben geneigt, auf den Boden gestellt.

Pinhole photos show an equal amount of sharpness/ unsharpness throughout the picture – from foreground to background. Seen from a frog’s perspective, sometimes the world looks strangely different. Here the camera was placed on the ground an tilted up by approx. 5 degrees.

Stolze Besitzer einer Nikon Spiegelreflexkamera, egal ob analog oder digital, können sich freuen – als neues Mitglied in der Familie der Skink Pinhole Pancakes ist die Variante “Versa” ab sofort lieferbar. So wie schon bei der klassischen Variante, können auch hier wahlweise Lochblenden, Zonenplatten und Photonensiebe eingesetzt werden. Beide Versionen arbeiten mit gleicher Brennweite, so daß die verschiedenen Blenden untereinander kompatibel sind.

Zusätzlich bietet der Skink Pinhole Pancake Versa ein Filtergewinde. So können nun auch diverse Filter direkt angebracht werden.
